About Cathy Childs
I first picked up a camera in 1975. It was a Pentax Spotmatic 35 mm. The minute I looked through the viewfinder I was hooked. I just loved taking photographs. My maternal grandmother’s sister was a professional photographer with her own studio in Wisconsin in the early 1900’s. I guess I inherited the photography gene from her and my passion for horses from my maternal grandfather. My grandfather was a professional harness horse trainer and driver.
I studied photography and graphic design in college and as soon as I could afford the equipment I had my own darkroom. I developed and processed all my own photographs – at first only black and white and eventually even color photos. As a student I learned about the mechanics of photography (loading the film, developing the film, printing my own photographs in the darkroom) but over the years I have learned so much more about the ART of photography. As my passion for the art of photography grew so did my creativity.
Anyone can take a photograph - I create works of art. Whether I'm shooting a family photo session, your vacation memories, a precious grandchild, a cherished pet or beloved horse my goal is to capture the Heart & Soul of my subjects - to capture the feeling of that moment in time. That, to me, is the Art of Photography - MY ART.
I sold my first photographic piece of art in 1980. It was a black and white photograph of a vine covered windmill in Madison, WI.
In 1987 my equine photographs were published in California Horse Review. My photographs have since been published in Western Horseman, Horse and Horseman, The Pony Press and The Horse World Gazette. As a professional equine photographer with more than 20 years experience I have photographed equine events from horse shows to rodeos to endurance rides in California, Colorado, Indiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.
